Key Information
Introduction
Laser engraving on marble is a meaningful way to preserve a memory in a lasting form.
With a well-prepared photo and the right engraving settings, a plain piece of marble can become a personal memorial, tribute, or keepsake with clear visual detail.
In this project, you will learn how to choose the right marble, prepare the photo, set up the engraving file, focus the laser, run a test, and finish the engraved piece.
Before your work begins
Operational Process
Prepare & Position the Marble
Select a piece of dark marble with a smooth, polished surface. Black marble usually works best because it provides strong contrast for photo engraving.
Clean the stone thoroughly to remove dust, fingerprints, and oils. Use a lint-free cloth and a small amount of rubbing alcohol if needed, then place the marble on the work area after it is clean and dry.
Select & Process the Photo
Choose a photo with clear details, natural contrast, and a wide range of tones. Portraits with visible eyes, hair, hands, and soft shading usually work well for marble engraving.
Avoid blurry, overly dark, or flat images. Convert the selected photo to grayscale, adjust brightness and contrast, and export it as a high-resolution PNG or JPG at the final engraving size.
Import the processed photo into your laser software, invert the image, and apply dithering such as Jarvis or Stucki. For photo engraving on stone, 300–600 DPI is a useful range, and the source image DPI should stay consistent with the engraving DPI.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Accurate focusing is critical for engraving fine photo details on marble. If your machine supports auto focus, use it for quick setup on a flat marble slab.
For manual focusing, adjust the laser head until the focal tool or focus stick just touches the marble surface at a vertical angle. Make sure the marble sits level to avoid blurry or uneven engraving.
Frame the Design & Start Laser Engraving
Resize the image to match the target engraving area on the marble. Use the Frame or Preview function to check alignment before engraving.
Before engraving the final piece, run a low-power test pass on a corner or scrap piece of marble. When the test result looks good, start engraving the full photo and monitor the process carefully.
Post Processing
After engraving, allow the marble to cool for a moment. Wipe the surface gently with a damp cloth to remove dust or residue.
Check the clarity and detail of the engraved photo. If needed, apply a light coat of stone polish or mineral oil to deepen the contrast and make the image stand out more vividly.
Come and Try!
Creating a photo engraving on marble is both an art and a craft. With the right preparation and attention to detail, your laser machine can turn a simple image into a lasting memorial.
Take your time choosing the right photo, fine-tune your settings, and let the stone carry the story forward.
