What routine maintenance does the machine need, and how often?
Regular maintenance keeps your machine performing at its best and extends its lifespan. Thunder Laser recommends the following schedule:

- Remove debris and residue from the work area and honeycomb / blade table
- Check for any material scraps that could present a fire risk if left inside
- Clean the focus lens with the recommended lens cleaning solution and lint-free wipes — never use alcohol on coated optics
- Inspect and clean the beam-combining mirrors
- Check the exhaust ducting for blockages
- Check and lubricate the X/Y/Z linear rails and guide rails
- Check beam alignment — if engraving quality has deteriorated, beam path realignment may be needed (contact tech support for guidance)
- Clean the cooling system fins (RF tube machines are air-cooled; ensure vents are clear)

How long does it take to learn, and what training resources are available?
Most new users are producing quality results within 1–3 days of setup. The learning curve depends on your familiarity with design software and how complex your intended projects are — but Thunder Laser machines are designed to be accessible to first-time users.

How do I do my first test engrave?
Once installation and software setup are complete, follow these steps for your first test:
- Load a simple design in LightBurn — a small rectangle or the included test file from the USB drive works well.
- Place your material on the honeycomb table. Use the included scrap test material for your first run.
- Set the home position — press the origin/home button so the laser head moves to its starting position relative to your material.
- Focus the laser — use the manual focusing tool or press Z/U → Auto Focus → Enter on the control panel.
- Frame the job first — use the "Frame" function in LightBurn or press the frame button on the machine. The laser head traces the outer boundary of your design at low speed with the laser off, so you can confirm placement before committing.
- Start the job — confirm exhaust and air assist are running, then press Start. Stay with the machine throughout the job.
- Review results — compare against the engraving test sample that shipped with your machine. If quality is lower than expected, check that scan offset settings are loaded and that focus distance is correct.
How do I power on the machine for the first time?
Follow this sequence carefully on first power-on:
The red warning light indicates the machine is powered and initialized. The green light means the machine is in a safe idle state.
- Confirm all internal cable ties and packing foam have been removed from inside the machine.
- Confirm the exhaust system is connected and functional, and the air assist system is connected.
- Confirm the machine is connected to your computer and the software is installed.
- Check that the E-Stop button is in the released position (rotate it in the direction of the arrows marked on it).
- Turn on the Main Switch first, then the Laser Switch. This order is important — turning on the laser switch before the main switch can cause issues with initialization.
- Wait for the startup beep. The laser head will automatically move to its home position (top-left corner). Do not press ESC during initialization — let the homing sequence complete.
- Once the machine displays its main interface, you are ready to test your connection from the software.

What are scan offset (reverse offset) settings, and why do they matter?
Scan offset (also called reverse offset or bidirectional offset) is a calibration value that compensates for the tiny mechanical lag that occurs when the laser head changes direction during raster engraving.
During engraving, the laser head moves rapidly left-to-right and right-to-left, firing the laser on both passes. Because of inertia, the laser fires at a very slightly different position on each directional pass — resulting in a visible "double image" or blurry edge if uncorrected.
Every machine has a unique scan offset value, measured and recorded during factory calibration testing. This value is included on the USB drive shipped with your machine and must be entered into LightBurn (under Edit → Device Settings → Scanning Offset) or RDWorks before your first engraving job.
Skipping this step is the single most common cause of poor engraving quality on new machines — especially visible on fine text and photo engravings at high speed. Always load these settings first.

Your machine ships with a USB flash drive containing everything you need:
The USB drive also contains the Thunder Laser parameter library for common materials — import this into LightBurn to access pre-tested power, speed, and pass settings as starting points.
- Insert the USB drive and locate the software installer folder. Install RDWorks V8 (included, Windows only) or LightBurn (recommended, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux — requires a separate license purchase).
- Install the software following the on-screen prompts.
- Open the software and set up your machine connection (USB or Ethernet, matching the physical connection you made).
- Load the scan offset / reverse offset calibration file from the USB drive. This step is essential — it compensates for the specific mechanical characteristics of your individual machine and ensures high-quality engraving results from the very first job. Refer to the LightBurn or RDWorks manual for how to import these settings.
- Test the connection by pressing the "Get Devices" or equivalent button — the software should recognize the machine and display its working area.

How do I connect the machine to my computer?
Thunder Laser machines support two connection methods — both cables are included in the accessory bag:
USB connection: Connect the USB cable from the machine to your computer. Simple plug-and-play for most setups. The controller supports USB 2.0 — use the cable included or a quality USB 2.0 cable.
Ethernet connection: Connect the Ethernet cable between the machine and your router, or directly between the machine and your computer. The machine is factory-assigned the IP address 192.168.1.100. Set the same IP address in your LightBurn or RDWorks network settings to establish communication. Ethernet is recommended for larger files and more stable transfers.
Important sequence: Always make electrical connections before turning on the machine. Never connect or disconnect cables while the machine is powered on — electrostatic discharge can damage the controller electronics.

How do I set up the exhaust system correctly?
The exhaust system is mandatory — never operate the machine without it. Setup steps:
Do not connect an air compressor to the exhaust port — this will damage the machine and is not covered by warranty.
- The exhaust fan is pre-installed on the machine. Pull out the gray exhaust pipe from the rear of the machine.
- Route the pipe (100 mm / 3.9" diameter, up to 3,300 mm / 130" long) to an external vent — ideally through a wall to outside your building.
- If routing outdoors is not possible, connect the pipe to an inline fume filtration unit with activated carbon and HEPA filtration to clean the air before it re-enters your workspace.
- Check every connection for leaks before operating. Most small gaps can be sealed with duct tape. A leaking exhaust system exposes operators to harmful fumes and is a fire risk.
- The TL-Timer smart board automatically controls the exhaust fan — it starts when the laser begins working and shuts off 30 seconds after the job finishes, ensuring all residual fumes are cleared.
Do not connect an air compressor to the exhaust port — this will damage the machine and is not covered by warranty.
What room conditions are required for installation?
Thunder Laser machines perform best and last longest when installed in a stable, controlled environment. Required conditions:
Avoid placing the machine in unheated storage areas, garages with extreme seasonal temperature swings, or environments where condensation is possible.
- Temperature: 15°C – 35°C (59°F – 95°F). Optimal range is 15°C – 25°C (59°F – 77°F). Avoid strong direct sunlight — use blinds if needed.
- Humidity: 40% – 70%, non-condensing. Never operate near the dew point.
- Dust and debris: Low-dust environment. Dust contamination on optical components accelerates wear and reduces output quality.
- Floor stability: Level, solid surface — ideally a concrete floor. Vibration from nearby machinery degrades engraving precision and accelerates mechanical wear over time. Proper installation on a stable surface is a warranty condition.
- Ventilation: Good ambient air circulation. The workspace must have access to an external vent or suitable fume filtration system.

What comes in the box when my Thunder Laser machine arrives?
Your Thunder Laser machine ships in a wooden crate. Inside you will find:
Important: Keep the original wooden crate. You will need it if you ever have to return or ship the machine for service.
- The laser machine — with honeycomb and solid metal blade work tables already installed
- Tool bag / accessories box — containing the main power cable, door keys, main switch key, Ethernet cable, USB cable, and focusing tool
- USB flash drive — pre-loaded with software (LightBurn/RDWorks/LaserMaker), the full user manual, material parameter libraries, and this machine's specific scan offset calibration file
- Engraving test sample — a pre-cut sample piece demonstrating what the machine can do
- Air pump — for the air assist system (Nova Plus and Bolt series)
- Exhaust ducting — pre-installed fan with a 100 mm exhaust pipe
- Optional accessories ordered — such as the rotary attachment or additional lens sizes
