Introduction

Let’s create imitation fossils with a cool mix of ancient charm and modern laser craftsmanship.

With laser etching, simple pebbles can be turned into fossil-style decorations with detailed textures and natural character. Instead of waiting millions of years, you can create fossil-inspired pieces in just one project.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to position a pebble, import the laser etching file, set the correct focus, frame the design, and create imitation fossil decorations with Aurora Lite.

Before your work begins

Make sure the machine is connected and operating normally
Remove the lens cover before etching
Place a plywood pad under the pebble to protect the laser bed
Keep the pebble stable and test the etching settings before the final job

Operational Process

STEP01

Prepare & Position the Pebble

Place a piece of plywood on the laser bed as a protective pad, then place the pebble on top of it.

The plywood pad helps prevent the beam from damaging the laser bed. You can reuse old or failed engraving plywood as a practical backing layer to reduce waste.

STEP02

Import & Adjust the Etching File

Load the imitation fossil design into LightBurn software, then adjust the size and position to fit the pebble.

Since natural pebbles vary in size and surface shape, check the design placement carefully and make sure the laser etching parameters are set correctly before starting.

STEP03

Set the Correct Laser Focus

Missing the focus is one of the biggest reasons for laser etching failure. Make sure the pebble surface is properly focused before processing.

You can use auto focus or manual focus. When two red dots are visible on the pebble surface, it is out of focus. When the two light dots overlap each other, the surface is in focus.

STEP04

Frame the Design & Start Laser Etching

Press the frame button and check whether the red light indicates the correct etching area. The frame should fit the pebble surface.

If the frame is not aligned, adjust the design position until it fits correctly. After checking, close the laser door and begin the Aurora Lite laser etching process.

Post Processing

Stay near the machine during operation and monitor for unusual sounds or alarms. Avoid looking directly at the laser beam for too long, even when protective measures are in place.

Once laser etching is complete, carefully open the door and remove your imitation fossil pebble. Clean the surface gently to remove dust or residue, then use it as a decorative accent for planters, flower pots, or landscape arrangements.
