Key Information
Introduction
Looking for a way to create a truly personalized keepsake or collectible? Laser marking on brass coins can turn a simple metal blank into a detailed work of art.
Whether for commemorative gifts, awards, collections, or personal projects, this technique helps create precise patterns and a professional finish. With wraparound characters and a fine 3D image, a brass coin becomes both decorative and meaningful.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to prepare the brass coin, import the 3D coin file, confirm the marking settings, set the correct focus, frame the design, and complete a collectible 3D brass coin with Aurora Lite.
Before your work begins
Operational Process
Prepare & Position the Brass Coin
Lay the brass coin flat on the laser bed with the marking surface facing upward.
Make sure the coin is clean and free of fingerprints, oil, or dust, as surface contamination can affect the final marking quality.
Import & Position the 3D Coin File
Import your vector or image file into LightBurn, then adjust the placement to match the coin surface.
For 3D relief laser marking, image quality has a direct impact on the final result. A depth image, such as the bee design in this project, is ideal for creating a 3D effect.
For easier positioning, use a frame tool layer to outline the coin. Measure the brass coin, draw a circle that matches its shape, and place the depth image inside the circle.
Confirm the 3D Coin Marking Settings
Check the parameters carefully to achieve the desired 3D brass coin result.
For this project, bi-directional scanning is turned on to save time. Brass coin marking also requires high DPI, so the 3D image layer uses 1270 DPI and the character layer uses 2540 DPI. For the relief layer, choose 3D Sliced image mode.
Relief laser marking may require dozens or even hundreds of passes, so do not be surprised by high pass counts. Always confirm that the settings are correct before starting.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Focus is the key to success. If focus is ignored, the final result may not be satisfying.
Make sure the brass coin surface is properly focused before starting. You can use auto focus or manual focus. If you prefer manual focus, the focal stick must be in close contact with the coin surface.
Frame the Design & Start Laser Marking
Press the Frame button and check whether the red light shows the correct marking area. The frame should match the brass coin surface.
If the frame is not aligned, move the coin or adjust the design until they match. After checking, close the laser door and begin Aurora Lite’s 3D brass coin laser marking process.
Monitor the 3D Coin Marking Process
Stay near the machine and monitor for unusual sounds, alarms, or abnormal conditions during processing.
Since 3D brass relief marking can take a long time, you may do other work in the same room while the machine runs. Avoid staring directly at the marking point for too long, even with the door closed.
Post Processing
Once the marking is complete, allow the coin to cool for a few minutes, then carefully remove it from the laser bed. Inspect the marking depth, clarity, and consistency.
3D metal relief marking produces a lot of powder. Clean the finished coin and the inside of the machine after processing. You can brush the coin under running water with a soft toothbrush. For the machine, clean the lens with 99% alcohol and a dust-free cloth, wiping in a circle from the center outward.
For a stronger visual result, soak the cleaned brass coin in a copper blackening agent for more than 15 minutes, then clean and polish the coin.
Come and Try!
A custom 3D brass coin is perfect for metal relief enthusiasts, craft merchants, collectors, and anyone who loves personalized gifts.
Whether it is created as a commemorative gift, a display piece, or a meaningful keepsake, a laser-marked brass coin carries both visual detail and emotional value. With 3D depth, fine characters, and a polished finish, it can become a treasured addition to any collection.
