Key Information
Introduction
Are you still looking for what you can make with a laser cutter?
Try cutting a rocking chair model from MDF. The finished model has a clean structure and a charming miniature look.
This project is a great way to explore laser cutting, model assembly, and MDF design. You can even scale up the idea for a larger functional chair after proper testing and redesign.
Before your work begins
Operational Process
Prepare & Position the MDF
Place the 5mm MDF sheet flat on the laser working table and make sure the surface is clean and stable.
Secure the MDF if needed so it does not shift during cutting. The design should also be adjusted according to the actual type and size of the material before processing.
Import & Adjust the Design File
Design the rocking chair model file in CorelDraw, then send it to the laser software using the laser plug-in.
Input the cutting parameters, check the processing mode, and download the file to the laser cutter. The settings are only for reference, so users should test to find the best settings for their own material and machine.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Move the laser head to the correct starting position and adjust the focal distance before cutting.
After focusing, press the Origin button to set the starting point. Accurate focusing helps achieve cleaner edges and more reliable cutting results on MDF.
Frame the Design & Start Laser Cutting
Use the Frame function to check the cutting area and confirm that the rocking chair model design stays within the MDF sheet.
Once everything is aligned, press Start to run the laser cutting job. Stay near the machine and monitor the cutting process carefully.
Post Processing
After the laser finishes cutting, take out the chair pieces carefully and check whether all parts are fully cut through.
Assemble the MDF pieces into the rocking chair model. Once assembled, the chair model is complete and ready for display.
Come and Try!
MDF is a practical material for laser-cut models because it is easy to process and works well for assembled structures.
This rocking chair model is a fun way to practice laser cutting, assembly, and structural design. With proper redesign and testing, you may even try making a larger version in the future.
