Introduction

Let's make unique laser-cut wooden bookmarks!

Besides engraving, cutting is another great laser technique for creative projects. A laser cutter can shape the exterior into unique patterns and create hollow interior details for more distinctive designs.

This project combines engraving and cutting to create novel hollowed-out wooden bookmarks with both practical function and decorative beauty.

Before your work begins

Clean the lens and mirrors
Check the laser head and nozzle for dust or buildup
Ensure ventilation and air assist are working properly
Confirm the machine is running smoothly and normally

Operational Process

STEP01

Prepare & Position the Material

Prepare the plywood board and place it flat on the laser bed. A clean, stable surface helps keep the bookmark outline, hollow cutouts, and engraved details accurate.

Secure the wood if needed to prevent shifting during engraving and cutting, especially when processing thin bookmark edges and small interior cutouts.

STEP02

Import & Adjust the Design File

Import the wooden bookmark design file into LightBurn, then adjust the size, position, engraving settings, and cutting settings according to your plywood board.

Double-check the engraved pattern, bookmark outline, and hollow cutout areas before starting. Make sure all details fit within the usable wood area.

Set the Correct Laser Focus

Accurate focusing is important for achieving clear engraving and clean cutting edges on wood. If your machine has auto focus, use it for quick setup. For manual focusing, lower the laser head with the focus stick until it touches the wood surface at the correct angle.

Start Engraving & Cutting

Use the Frame function to outline the laser processing area. Make sure the projected frame matches your plywood board and the bookmark design stays within the material boundary.

Once everything is aligned, start the laser job. Stay near the machine while it’s running and monitor the engraving and cutting process carefully.

Post Processing

When the engraving and cutting are complete, carefully remove the wooden bookmarks from the laser bed.

Polish the bookmarks to remove any rough edges or uneven surfaces. Then apply a few drops of wood wax oil and spread it evenly with a towel to enhance the wood color and finish.

Come and Try!

Bookmarks make reading more interesting. Custom edges, engraved details, and hollow cutouts can turn a simple reading accessory into a personal handmade piece.

When not in use, the bookmark can also become a small decorative object on your desk or shelf, showing both laser precision and creative imagination.
