Introduction
Looking for another space-themed project to make with your laser cutter?
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to make a 3D wooden star model from 3mm plywood using the Thunder Nova 35 80W laser cutter. This decorative star is a great addition to a desk, bedroom, classroom, or creative display, and pairs well with a wooden moon model.
Follow the steps below to prepare the design, laser-cut the plywood pieces, and assemble your own wooden star. You can also download the design file to get started.
Before You Start
How to Make a 3D Wooden Star Model
Prepare & Position the Plywood
Prepare a sheet of 3mm plywood and place it flat on the laser bed.
Make sure the plywood is stable and positioned correctly before cutting. Check the material dimensions and confirm that the design will fit within the available cutting area.
Import & Adjust the Design File
Download the wooden star model design file and open it in CorelDRAW. Use the compatible laser plug-in or your machine's supported workflow to prepare the design for cutting.
Check the layout and cutting parameters in the laser software, then transfer the design to the machine. The original project workflow calls for cutting the design three times to produce enough parts for assembly. Confirm the required number of pieces and arrange the design accordingly before starting.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Adjust the laser focus according to the procedure for your Nova machine and laser head. Correct focus helps concentrate the beam on the plywood for consistent cutting results.
After focusing, set the job origin using the machine's control panel and confirm that the starting position matches the design layout. Follow the instructions for your specific machine configuration.
Frame the Design & Start Laser Cutting
Use the Frame function to check the working area and confirm that the wooden star design fits within the plywood sheet.
Once the material position and cutting settings are confirmed, start the job. Stay with the machine and monitor the cutting process continuously. Plywood is combustible, so make sure the exhaust system is working and follow the machine's safety instructions. Stop the job if you notice unexpected flames or abnormal machine behavior.
Assemble the Wooden Star
After cutting is complete and the machine is safe to access, remove the plywood pieces and check that the required parts have been cut through cleanly.
Arrange the pieces according to the design and test-fit them before applying glue. Use glue to secure the connecting areas where needed, then hold the parts in place while the adhesive sets. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions and allow the model to dry fully before displaying it.
Make Your Own Space-Themed Decoration
A 3D wooden star model is a simple, creative laser-cutting project that pairs well with a wooden moon for a coordinated space-themed display.
With a laser cutter and 3mm plywood, you can turn a digital design into a decorative wooden star. Download the project file and follow the steps above to create your own handmade model.
