In recent years, teenagers have become an important focus group in science and technology education. Students are encouraged to improve their abilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while developing creativity, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities.
On July 6, 2017, Thunder Laser and Luke, an international maker teacher, held a successful Laser Maker Course Experience at Zhongshan Education Information Centre. The course connected maker education with laser cutting and received recognition from the school, teachers, students, and the wider community.
Connecting Maker Education With Laser Cutting
The purpose of introducing laser cutters into education is to encourage students’ innovation, curiosity, active exploration, cooperation, and problem-solving ability. In this course, students learned how a laser cutter can help transform drawings and ideas into physical works.
The Maker Course combined strong teaching support, practical maker education experience, and professional laser cutter guidance. Students explored the basic theory of laser cutting, created personalized name cards, and hand-drew their own badges as part of the learning process.
From Design Class to Machine Operation
Theory and practice supported each other throughout the course. For many students, maker education was a new and different learning experience, and Luke’s SketchUp course helped them understand how design work can be connected with real production.
After drawing their designs, students used the Thunder Laser cutter to turn their ideas into real objects. Professional laser operator Ken taught the students how to use the laser cutter and guided them through the process of making their drawings.
Sharing Works and Learning Through Practice
Students were encouraged to show their works bravely and share both the results and the happiness of making. This sharing process became another meaningful part of the maker education experience, helping students build confidence while learning from one another.
The course also included communication between Thunder Laser General Manager King and Teacher Chen, reflecting the connection between school education, maker teaching, and laser technology applications.
Through this Laser Maker Course Experience, Thunder Laser continued to support laser STEAM education and encouraged students to explore the unknown world through creativity, cooperation, and hands-on learning.
