Key Information
Introduction
Marking a photo onto 304 stainless steel is one of the most impressive applications of a fiber laser.
From personalized gifts to commemorative plaques and custom keychains, stainless steel photo marking creates a permanent, high-contrast finish that looks premium and lasts for years.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to prepare your photo, adjust the image for laser marking, position the stainless steel tag, set the correct focus, and run a clean, detailed photo marking job.
Before your work begins
Operational Process
Prepare & Position the Stainless Steel Tag
Lay the 304 stainless steel tag flat on the laser bed. Make sure it is clean, fingerprint-free, and secured so it will not shift during marking.
To keep the sheet in place, you can use a simple wooden frame cut with a CO₂ laser. You can also place a wooden board underneath the stainless steel tag to protect the laser bed if the marking outline is slightly off.
Prepare & Import the Photo File
Before opening your laser software, process the photo first. Convert it to grayscale, then adjust curves, levels, contrast, and sharpness to create an image with clear details and strong contrast.
Import the processed photo into your laser software and position it on the canvas. Adjust the size and placement according to the stainless steel tag, then double-check the speed, power, frequency, and line interval for clean photo marking.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Focus is the key to a successful laser marking result. If the focus is ignored, the photo details may not be clear enough.
You can use the red-dot focus method or manual focus. For manual focus, adjust the laser head until the focus stick just touches the stainless steel surface in a vertical position.
Frame the Design & Start Laser Marking
Run a framing or outline preview to confirm that the marking area matches the position of the stainless steel tag.
Make any necessary adjustments before starting the job. Once everything is aligned, click Start to begin laser marking with Aurora Lite and monitor the process carefully.
Post Processing
Keep an eye on the machine during marking so you can spot unusual conditions, such as error alarms, smoke build-up, or unexpected pauses.
Once marking is complete, let the stainless steel tag cool down briefly before handling it. Then your metal photo piece is ready to display, gift, or turn into a personalized keychain.
Come and Try!
With the right setup, you can create professional-quality photo markings on stainless steel.
Grab a piece of 304 stainless steel, choose a meaningful photo, and try marking your first metal portrait. You may be surprised by the clarity, contrast, and permanence a fiber laser can achieve.
