Introduction
Laser marking ABS keycaps and PBT keycaps is a clean way to create custom keyboard legends, icons, logos, and decorative patterns.
With the right fiber laser marking machine, coated ABS keycaps can reveal crisp shine-through legends for backlit keyboards, while PBT keycaps can produce bold, opaque marks with a durable custom look. Whether you are building a gaming keyboard, upgrading a work setup, or creating custom mechanical keyboard accessories, laser-marked keycaps add personality to every keystroke.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to position ABS and PBT keycaps, import the keycap laser marking file, set the correct focus, frame the design, and complete personalized keycaps with Aurora Fiber.
Before your work begins
Operational Process
Prepare & Position the Keycaps
Choose the coated ABS keycaps or PBT keycaps you want to customize and place them on the laser bed.
Make sure each keycap is clean, stable, and positioned with the marking surface facing upward. Stable placement helps keep the ABS keycap or PBT keycap legend sharp and prevents the design from shifting during laser marking.
Import & Adjust the Marking File
Load your keycap design into LightBurn software, then adjust the size and position to fit the ABS or PBT keycap surface. You can create keyboard letters, icons, symbols, shortcut labels, brand marks, or decorative designs for custom keycaps.
ABS keycaps and PBT keycaps use different laser marking settings, so check the correct parameter group before starting. Coated ABS keycaps are often used for shine-through keyboard legends, while PBT keycaps usually create stronger opaque marks. Correct settings help create clear legends and consistent laser-marked keycaps.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Missing the focus is one of the biggest reasons for poor keycap laser marking or laser engraving results. Make sure the ABS keycap or PBT keycap surface is properly focused before processing.
You can use auto focus or manual focus. When two red dots are visible on the keycap surface, it is out of focus. When the two light dots overlap each other, the surface is in focus and ready for laser marking.
Frame the Design & Start Laser Marking
Press the frame button and check whether the red light indicates the correct marking area. The frame should stay inside the top surface of the ABS or PBT keycap, with the legend, icon, or custom design centered properly.
If the frame is not aligned, adjust the design position until it fits correctly. After checking, close the laser door and begin the Aurora Fiber laser marking process. Stay nearby while the laser machine marks the custom keycap design.
Post Processing
Stay near the machine during operation and monitor for unusual sounds or alarms. Avoid looking directly at the laser beam for too long, even when protective measures are in place.
Once laser marking is complete, carefully open the door and remove the personalized ABS and PBT keycaps. Clean them gently if needed, then check whether the legends, icons, and custom marks are clear and consistent. Install the finished laser-marked keycaps on your keyboard and enjoy the custom look.
Come and Try!
Laser-marked ABS and PBT keycaps can turn a standard keyboard into a more personal and professional setup. ABS keycaps are ideal for crisp shine-through legends, while PBT keycaps offer a clean, durable look for custom keyboard designs, gaming setups, work keyboards, and branded keycap projects.
