Key Information
Introduction
There’s something magical about holding a miniature version of the universe in your hands. A wooden planet puzzle doesn’t just challenge your problem-solving skills—it also turns into a beautiful decorative piece once complete.
Whether you’re a fan of astronomy, a DIY enthusiast, or just looking for a meaningful project to try, laser cutting a planet puzzle from wood is both fun and rewarding.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through how I made a wooden planet puzzle with my laser machine, sharing each step along the way. By the end, you’ll have a finished piece that’s as satisfying to build as it is to display.
Before your work begins
Operational Process
Prepare & Position the Material
Start by laying your wooden board flat on the laser bed. Make sure the surface is clean and sits evenly without warping.
Use pins to prevent any shifting during cutting. Be mindful of the height of magnets and pins. If they are too tall, the sensor might hit them and become damaged during processing.
Import & Adjust the Design File
Open your preferred laser software, such as LaserMaker, and load the planet puzzle design file. Adjust the size and positioning so it matches the area of your wood sheet.
Double-check the dimensions, as even a small mismatch can make the puzzle pieces too loose or too tight. Make sure the engraving and cutting layers use the correct parameters before sending the file to the machine.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Proper focusing is essential for achieving crisp engravings and smooth cuts. If your machine supports auto focus, a single click will set the correct distance for flat wooden boards. If you prefer manual focus, use the focus stick to adjust the laser head until it touches the surface of the wood at a perfect vertical angle.
Start Engraving & Cutting
Use the Frame function to outline the engraving and cutting area. Make sure the projected frame matches your wood sheet and the design stays within the material boundary.
Once everything is aligned, start the laser job. Stay near the machine while it’s running and watch the cutting and engraving progress. Keep an eye out for excessive smoke, small flame-ups, or any movement of the material that could affect the outcome.
Post Processing
Once the laser job is complete, carefully remove the puzzle pieces from the bed. Check the edges and engraved details, then gently wipe away any dust or residue.
Assemble the wooden planet puzzle and make sure each piece fits smoothly. The natural wood grain gives the planets a warm, organic look, making the finished piece both playful and decorative.
Come and Try!
Now it’s your turn. Grab a sheet of wood, load up your planet puzzle design, and let your laser cutter bring the universe to life. Whether you keep it on your desk, gift it to a space-loving friend, or even paint the planets for a colorful twist, this project is guaranteed to bring joy.
So, ready to build your own little universe?
