304 VS. 316 STAINLESS STEEL
FIBER LASER CUTTING FAQ
Yes. Both 304 and 316 stainless steel can be cut with a fiber laser. The results depend on laser power, material thickness, assist gas, and cutting parameters.
Neither grade is universally easier to cut. Cutting performance depends on material thickness, machine configuration, assist gas, and parameter optimization.
Nitrogen is generally preferred for clean, low-oxidation edges. Oxygen may be suitable when an oxidized edge is acceptable and the process has been validated.
Not necessarily. Similar initial settings may be suitable under comparable conditions. As a starting point, you can test a 5–12% speed reduction or a 5–10% power increase for 316/316L, then optimize based on actual cut quality.
Not always. Material costs, cutting time, assist gas consumption, and post-processing all affect the total cost. Compare the actual production requirements for each grade.
316 is generally preferred because it offers better resistance to many chloride-related corrosive environments, including saltwater exposure. The specific environment and maintenance requirements should still be considered.

Introduction
A personalized newborn keepsake is a lovely way to preserve a baby's first memories in a handmade wooden display. By combining a baby photo, custom lettering, and colorful decorative pieces, you can create a keepsake that feels personal to the family and meaningful for years to come.
This project uses three laser processes on 3mm plywood. Scoring creates outline lines and decorative details, engraving adds the baby's photo and text, and cutting shapes the outer design and openwork pieces. The wooden components are then painted and assembled by hand to create a layered keepsake.
You can personalize the design with a baby's name, birth date, birth time, weight, height, or other details that matter to the family. Choose paint colors to match a nursery, or make the finished piece a thoughtful baby shower gift, newborn announcement, or family memento.

Before your work begins
Operational Process
Prepare & Position the Plywood
Place the 3mm plywood flat on the Thunder Bolt honeycomb bed. Check that the sheet is clean, dry, and free from noticeable warping before beginning.
Use honeycomb pins to secure the plywood so it stays flat and stable throughout the scoring, engraving, and cutting process. Position the pins outside the design area to keep them clear of the photo, lettering, decorative details, and outer cutting paths.
Import & Adjust the Design File
Import the personalized keepsake design into LaserMaker. Then import the baby's photo and place it in the intended photo area. Convert the image to grayscale or black and white, adjust the contrast so facial features and important details remain distinguishable, and crop or resize the image to fit the layout.
Add or adjust the baby's name, birth details, and decorative graphics as needed. Assign the outline lines and decorative details to the scoring layer, the baby photo and text to the engraving layer, and the outer shapes and openwork sections to the cutting layer.
Set the scoring parameters to speed 800mm/s, max power 15%, min power 10%, 1 pass, and LOW air assist. Use scoring for outline lines and decorative details.
Set the engraving parameters to speed 800mm/s, power 30%, 300 DPI, and LOW air assist. Use engraving for the baby's photo and text.
Set the cutting parameters to speed 10mm/s, max power 30%, min power 10%, and HIGH air assist. Use cutting for the outer shapes and openwork sections. Review the artwork and all three process layers before sending the file to the machine.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Set the laser focus on the top surface of the 3mm plywood before processing. Use the Thunder Bolt autofocus function for a quick setup or check the focal position manually.
Make sure the board remains flat and secured after focusing. A consistent working distance helps maintain detail across the engraved baby photo, lettering, decorative marks, and cutting outlines.
Frame the Design & Start Laser Processing
Run the Frame function to preview the complete design area and confirm that the photo, lettering, decorative details, outer shapes, and openwork all fit within the plywood sheet.
Check the position and clearance around every component. Once the Frame preview is correct, keep the plywood in place and start the job. Process the scoring and engraving details, then run the cutting layer so the outer shapes and smaller cutout pieces are released after the other details are complete.
Paint, Assemble & Display the Newborn Keepsake
After laser processing, carefully remove the cut pieces and arrange the small decorative components in their correct positions. Use masking tape to temporarily hold the smaller pieces in place while preparing them for painting.
Apply paint and use paint pens to color the decorative details, lettering, and selected wooden pieces. Choose colors that complement the baby's photo and the intended nursery or gift style. Allow the painted pieces to dry before assembly.
Once the paint is dry, apply glue to the matching parts and assemble the layered keepsake. Align the photo area, text, and decorative pieces carefully, then let the glue set before handling the finished item.
Finally, display the completed personalized newborn keepsake on a shelf, dresser, or nursery wall. Check that the baby photo, name, and decorative elements are clearly visible and that all assembled pieces are secure.
Come and Try!
My newborn keepsake is ready. What special details will you add to yours?
Try combining a favorite baby photo with a name, birth date, birth time, weight, height, or small decorative details. Experiment with paint colors and layered wooden elements to create a meaningful keepsake for a nursery, a new family, or a baby shower gift.

CUTTING SETTINGS FAQ
The best settings depend on sheet thickness, laser power, assist gas, and machine configuration. Start with a validated parameter table, then test and optimize the settings for the required cut quality.
Thicker sheets generally require more cutting energy and often lower cutting speeds. The actual speed depends on laser power, assist gas, cutting head setup, and material condition.
Nitrogen is commonly preferred for clean, low-oxidation edges. Compressed air may be suitable when cost is a priority and the resulting edge quality meets requirements. Oxygen may be used when an oxidized edge is acceptable and the process is validated.
Possible causes include excessive cutting speed, insufficient effective cutting energy, incorrect focus, unsuitable gas pressure, nozzle misalignment, or uneven material. Check the complete setup before changing individual parameters.
Check cutting speed, assist gas pressure, focus position, nozzle condition, and gas flow. Make controlled adjustments and verify the result with test cuts rather than assuming that one setting will resolve every dross problem.
Not always. Comparable initial settings may work under similar conditions, but each grade should be tested. Adjust the parameters according to actual cut-through and edge quality.
Visit the Thunder Laser Metal Cutting Machine Settings page linked in Section 2 for reference settings by material and thickness. Check that the listed laser power and assist gas match your machine configuration, and validate the settings before production.
